Turkish Supreme Court rules saying 'I don't love you' can be grounds for divorce

On 14 June 2026 Turkey’s Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) 2nd Civil Chamber issued a landmark decision that a spouse’s statement “Seni sevmiyorum, sevgim bitti” (“I don’t love you, my love is over”) can constitute fault and justify divorce.

The case involved a young couple marked by severe incompatibility and domestic violence. The lower family court had found the husband culpable for violence but rejected the wife’s divorce request. Yargıtay reversed the ruling, deeming both parties at fault and granting the divorce, thereby creating a precedent for future divorce proceedings in Turkey.
