Turkish television series reach 1 billion global viewers

Turkish television series have reached a global audience of approximately 1 billion people across nearly 170 countries, according to officials at a recent media workshop in Istanbul. Burhanettin Duran, head of the Directorate of Communications, noted that series exports have grown from roughly $10 million in the early 2000s to over $1 billion today, positioning Turkey as one of the top three global exporters in the sector.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the role of these productions in promoting Turkish culture, language, and gastronomy, a phenomenon referred to as ‘screen tourism.’ He noted that the popularity of these shows drives interest in visiting Turkish cities and learning the Turkish language. A study by the Yunus Emre Institute and RTÜK indicated that 81 percent of 5,000 foreign participants learning Turkish began their studies through watching Turkish series.

To further bolster the industry, the government has introduced new support policies. These changes include removing the requirement for a series to have aired for at least one full season to qualify for aid, allowing support to be evaluated on an episode-by-episode basis, and permitting a single production company to receive support for multiple projects.
