Turkish transport operators face crisis over rising costs
Turkish transport operators and public bus cooperatives are facing a severe financial crisis due to surging operational costs. Ismail Hakkı Çobanoğlu, President of the Vakfıkebir Drivers and Automobile Chamber, reported that rising diesel prices, increased vehicle insurance, and higher social security premiums are making it impossible for tradesmen to remain solvent. He noted that many members are selling personal assets to cover debts and warned that these costs will eventually be passed on to citizens through higher public transport and shipping rates.
Similarly, the Union of All Private Public Bus Cooperatives (TÖHOB) expressed deep concern over the economic burden. TÖHOB President Kurtuluş Kara highlighted that operators are suffering from volatile fuel prices and the costs associated with providing free transportation for certain passenger categories. Kara noted that operators cannot set their own prices and must rely on municipal or council decisions for fare adjustments and subsidies.
While some operators had previously considered a strike by shutting down engines, TÖHOB leadership has decided to postpone such action to avoid victimizing the public. Instead, they plan to request a meeting with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. If a meeting is not granted, they intend to visit the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on October 1, the first day of the new parliamentary session, to seek assistance from officials.
