Turkish universities highlight advancements in medicine, marine science, and sonar technology
The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has released a report detailing significant research breakthroughs from various Turkish universities.
A major medical study led by Atatürk University's Faculty of Medicine, published in Nature Communications, analyzed molecular data from 4,444 individuals across 98 different health conditions. Utilizing machine learning, the “Whole Blood Transcriptomics Atlas Across Human Diseases” research aims to identify biomarkers for early diagnosis and personalized treatment for conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
In marine science, Dokuz Eylül University’s Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies continues extensive research across the Aegean, Marmara, Black, and Mediterranean Seas. Following over 500 scientific expeditions with the R/V Koca Piri Reis, the institute has proposed the “R/V Emir Çakabey” New Research Vessel Project to expand its scientific infrastructure.
Additionally, a team at OSTİM Technical University, led by Associate Professor Metin Balcı, has developed a domestic, portable sonar system designed for high-resolution underwater imaging. This technology is intended for search and rescue operations, including locating missing persons or vehicles. Five of the six produced units have already been delivered to AFAD.
