Turkish University AI Platform Targets Liver Cancer Treatment

Dr. Sezin Barın, an associate professor at Afyon Kocatepe University’s Biomedical Engineering Department, leads a project funded by the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB) under its 2026‑B2‑01 R&D support program. With a budget of about 3 million Turkish lira, the interdisciplinary team—including computer engineering researcher Dr. Gür Emre Güraksın—aims to develop an artificial‑intelligence‑based platform for drug repurposing in hepatocellular carcinoma. The project will use AI and bioinformatics methods to identify existing drugs that could be effective against liver cancer, followed by in‑vitro and in‑vivo validation to ensure reliability and applicability.

The initiative seeks to create a scientifically robust, reproducible pipeline that can accelerate the discovery of new therapeutic options for a cancer type that remains a major global health challenge. By integrating biomedical engineering, AI, and experimental validation, the team hopes to contribute novel treatment candidates and a scalable platform for future oncology research.
