Turkish workers begin return trips through Kapıkule border

After spending their annual leave in Turkey, many Turkish migrant workers (gurbetçi) have started the journey back to Europe. The main crossing points, Kapıkule Border Gate in Turkey and Kapitan Andreevo Border Gate in Bulgaria, are experiencing heavy queues as travelers head toward Germany and other EU countries.

Travelers describe a mix of emotions: Neriman Sezer said, “We were very happy when we arrived, but now we are very sad on the way back. A very difficult journey has begun again.” Serhat Han added, “Our holiday in Turkey was great; we saw everything. Hopefully we return without accidents.” Officials warn that the surge in traffic will likely continue for several days, affecting both border operations and road safety.

The situation highlights the seasonal pattern of Turkish diaspora returning home after the summer vacation period, creating a temporary strain on border infrastructure and traffic management.
