Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have formalized a trilateral defense pact known as the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement. Signed on August 7, 2026, in the holy city of Makkah, the agreement establishes a collective defense principle: an armed attack against any one of the three nations will be treated as an attack against all of them.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan described the pact as "technically comparable to NATO's Article 5 collective-defense clause." The alliance aims to bolster regional deterrence and enhance security through intelligence sharing, joint military training, and defense industry cooperation to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. To manage the pact, a ministerial committee and a secretariat will be established in Saudi Arabia.

Officials emphasized that the agreement is purely defensive and is not directed against any specific country, including Iran. However, the timing of the announcement has drawn regional scrutiny. Turkey has expressed interest in expanding the alliance, specifically identifying Egypt as a "natural partner" for future membership once certain technical hurdles are overcome.
