Turkmenistan adopts Chinese air defense systems

Turkmenistan has expanded its air defense capabilities by incorporating Chinese-made military hardware, signaling a shift in the regional arms market traditionally dominated by Russia. During an Independence Day parade in Ashgabat on September 27, at least 10 FK-2000 gun-missile systems were displayed.

Developed by the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the FK-2000 is a mobile air defense system that combines missiles with 30 mm twin-barrel guns, integrated radar, and electro-optical sensors. The system is designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and precision-guided weapons. According to the People's Liberation Army Daily, the system's missiles can engage targets at distances ranging from 1.2 km to 25 km.

Other Chinese military equipment observed during the parade included DJI Matrice 30T and Norinco Sky Saker FX80 UAVs, as well as a radar system identified by Turkmen state media as the ‘YLS-18A’. This increasing presence of Chinese weaponry in Central Asia comes as regional nations seek alternative suppliers while Russia's own military reserves are strained by the conflict in Ukraine.
