Turkmenistan expands energy infrastructure and addresses methane leaks

Turkmenistan is initiating new housing projects for oil and gas workers in Balkanabat, Turkmenbashi, and Mary, located near the Galkynysh gas field. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved proposals for several multi-story buildings to accommodate hundreds of households as the country expands infrastructure in the Mary region.

The Galkynysh field, one of the world's largest with estimated reserves of 27 trillion cubic meters, remains a central component of Turkmenistan's export strategy. China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) continues to be a key partner in the field's development, having recently signed a contract for the fourth phase of the project.

In a separate environmental development, Turkmenistan has begun efforts to repair significant methane leaks within its energy infrastructure. The country has previously been identified as having high rates of methane emissions from production and transport facilities, which are potent greenhouse gases.
