Turkmenistan Launches Plan for UN‑Declared 2028 Year of International Law

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on July 24, 2026 declaring 2028 the Year of International Law. The initiative was originally proposed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan and received unanimous support, with 78 co‑sponsoring states.

In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened a conference of officials, academics and students. Deputy Chairman and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov presented a National Action Plan for 2026‑2028 and a National Concept linking international law to Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality. The plan calls for an inter‑agency commission, university courses, digital resources, a multilingual portal, an International Law Week, model UN seminars and media programmes to raise legal literacy and promote the thematic year.
