Turkmenistan seeks expanded gas export markets at Ashgabat energy forum

The annual Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2026 conference in Ashgabat saw a record attendance of approximately 700 foreign participants, marking a 40% increase from the previous year. Chinese and Malaysian firms were notably well-represented at the event.

During the forum, Turkmengaz Chairman Maksat Babayev expressed support for the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline project, stating the country is ready to supply gas through the corridor. This interest includes the development of logistics routes, port infrastructure, and cables, which would require further expansion of the Galkynysh gas field.

Discussions also addressed environmental concerns regarding the Caspian Sea. Myrat Atajanov, Director of the Turkmen Institute of the Caspian Sea, highlighted the risks posed by declining water levels to offshore platforms, subsea pipelines, and coastal industrial infrastructure. He advocated for a science-based approach to assess vulnerabilities and develop adaptation measures to protect long-term investments.
