Turmeric health benefits face scientific scrutiny
Turmeric, a spice widely used in South Asian, African, and South American cuisines, is increasingly popular in Western markets due to perceived health benefits. Its primary active compound, curcumin, is marketed for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, often used in supplements to support immune and joint health.
However, scientific research presents a more complex picture. While curcumin shows promise in laboratory settings, chemist Dr. Kathryn Nelson notes that its highly reactive nature can lead to misleading results in cell or animal studies that may not translate to humans. A significant challenge is bioavailability, as very little curcumin is actually absorbed into the bloodstream when taken orally.
Clinical studies have also yielded disappointing results. Professor Amit Garg and his team at the London Health Sciences Centre conducted research involving approximately 600 participants to see if curcumin could reduce kidney inflammation and damage following aortic aneurysm surgery. The study failed to show the expected protective effects. Subsequent research on patients with existing kidney disease also found insufficient evidence that curcumin prevents disease progression or improves kidney function.
