Turner’s Rome masterpiece returns to Italy ahead of London auction

J. M. W. Turner’s 1836 masterpiece, ‘Rome, from Mount Aventine’, is returning to Rome for a brief public exhibition at Palazzo Rondinini before heading to a Sotheby’s auction in London on December 9. The painting, which depicts a panoramic view of the city from the Aventine Hill, carries an estimated value of approximately £50 million to £66 million.

The artwork is noted for its exceptional state of preservation, as it remains unlined and retains its original frame and surface, including visible traces of the artist’s technique. Originally commissioned by Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro of Novar, the piece has seen significant market movement, previously selling for a record £30.3 million in 2014.

Sotheby’s describes the Roman exhibition as a ‘homecoming,’ as the work was inspired by studies Turner conducted during his stays in Italy between 1828 and 1829. Following its display in Rome, the painting is scheduled to tour Hong Kong and New York before the London sale.
