Tuscan coast white granules confirmed as biological origin

Analyses conducted by ARPAT have confirmed that the mysterious white granules found on the coasts of Tuscany are of biological origin and not plastic residue. The material was discovered across an extensive area, including the stretches between Rimigliano and Baratti, the Gulf of Follonica, and Rio Marina on Elba Island.

Laboratory tests identified the substance primarily as sodium alginate, a biological substance. Microscopic examinations also revealed structures linked to the tissues of higher plants, suggesting the involvement of coastal vegetation. While the composition has been clarified, researchers are still investigating the exact origin and the causes behind the widespread presence of the material, noting that no similar large-scale phenomenon has been previously documented in the Mediterranean.

Piombino Mayor Francesco Ferrari urged responsibility regarding the findings, noting that scientific analysis should precede speculation. He emphasized that while the plastic alarm has been debunked, investigations will continue to understand the environmental drivers of this phenomenon.
