Tuscan coast white granules identified as decomposed water lentils

The mystery of white granules appearing on various Tuscan beaches, including Elba Island and the gulfs of Baratti and Follonica, has been resolved. Investigations by ARPAT, supported by botanists from the University of Siena, have identified the material as decomposed water lentils (Lemna gibba).

These small, freshwater aquatic plants originally appeared in massive quantities in various rivers and lakes across Italy and Europe, including the Po and Reno rivers. They were observed in the Arno River near Florence and Pisa during late summer 2026.

Experts believe the plants were carried from the mouth of the Arno River toward the south by marine currents and winds. The white color of the granules is due to the loss of chlorophyll during the decomposition process. The phenomenon is likely linked to exceptional weather conditions this summer, which resulted in higher surface water temperatures in both freshwater and marine environments.
