Tuscany adopts local chemical standards for marine sediment reuse

The Tuscany regional government has approved a new methodological proposal regarding local chemical values for marine sediments. This initiative aims to facilitate the reuse of sediments in beach replenishment and coastal defense projects while ensuring environmental protection.

Instead of automatically applying national standards, the new methodology allows for reference values based on the natural characteristics of sediments found along the Tuscan coast. This approach provides a more precise assessment of sediment quality and supports the recovery and reuse of materials when environmental conditions permit.

The framework was developed through scientific and institutional collaboration involving the Tuscany Region, ISPRA, ARPAT, LaMMA, CNR, and the Higher Institute of Health. The initiative aligns with recent updates to national regulations following ministerial decree 450.
