Tuscany and Sardinia form alliance for Einstein Telescope candidacy
The presidents of Tuscany and Sardinia, Eugenio Giani and Alessandra Todde, have formalized a strategic institutional and scientific alliance to support Italy’s bid to host the Einstein Telescope (ET). The agreement, supported by the Umbria region and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), aims to leverage Italy’s existing expertise in gravitational wave research.
The alliance seeks to connect the scientific excellence of the Virgo interferometer in Tuscany with the potential site for the Einstein Telescope in Lula, Sardinia, and the CAOS laboratory in Umbria. By networking these competencies, Italy intends to position itself as a global center for astrophysical research.
The Einstein Telescope is envisioned as a revolutionary European observatory. This initiative builds upon the legacy of the Virgo detector, which played a critical role in the historic 2016 discovery of gravitational waves.
