Tuscany approves financial aid for social egg freezing

The Tuscany Regional Council has approved a new law providing financial support for “social freezing,” the cryopreservation of oocytes for personal rather than medical reasons. The measure aims to support women in planning future pregnancies by offsetting the costs of egg freezing.

Under the new regulation, women aged 25 to 39 who have resided in Tuscany for at least one year and have a family ISEE not exceeding 30,000 euros can receive a contribution of up to 3,000 euros. The regional government has allocated a total of 550,000 euros to fund this initiative through 2028, with 50,000 euros earmarked for 2026 and 250,000 euros for each of the following two years.

The law passed with significant support from the majority, though it faced opposition from members of Fratelli d’Italia and Forza Italia, as well as criticism from Pro Vita groups. Opponents argued the measure promotes a practice that may carry health risks or provide false hope, while supporters characterized it as a milestone for reproductive freedom and gender equality.
