Tuscany approves Toscana Strade to manage Fi-Pi-Li highway
The Tuscany regional government has unanimously approved a proposal to establish Toscana Strade, a new in-house public company dedicated to managing the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno (Fi-Pi-Li) highway. The 99-kilometer artery is one of Italy’s busiest regional roads, handling approximately 50,000 vehicles daily.
Regional President Eugenio Giani stated that the company’s primary mission is to move beyond routine maintenance to implement substantial upgrades, including the addition of third lanes and improved safety shoulders. The initiative aims to enhance efficiency and safety on this critical transport axis. The proposal now moves to the Regional Council for a final vote, which is expected by mid-October.
To fund its initial operations, Toscana Strade will receive a 5 million euro regional contribution and 50% of the revenue from speed camera fines. While the immediate focus is on infrastructure improvements, the regional government is also considering the introduction of a free-flow toll for heavy goods vehicles (TIR) starting in 2028. This potential tolling system is expected to generate between 15 and 18 million euros annually.
