Tuscany authorities warn of SMS phishing scam targeting motorists

Authorities in Tuscany, including the Rosignano Marittimo Local Police, have issued warnings regarding a widespread SMS phishing scam targeting motorists. The fraudulent messages use the PagoPA heading to mimic official digital payment notifications, claiming the recipient has committed a speeding violation caught by a speed camera.

The scam directs users to a fraudulent website that asks for their vehicle license plate number. Once entered, the site displays a fake fine and offers a 30% discount for immediate payment to create a sense of urgency. The ultimate goal of the operation is to steal personal information and credit card details rather than the fine amount itself.

Official channels for traffic violations in Italy include registered mail, PEC (certified email), or the IO app. The National Cybersecurity Agency and Csirt Italia have also flagged this campaign. Citizens are advised not to click any links in suspicious messages and to report such incidents to the Postal Police.
