Tuscany coastal defense inspections and Scarlino waste‑tax dispute

Regional environment assessor David Barontini toured the Tuscan coast on 31 July, inspecting works in Follonica, Marina di Scarlino and Monte Argentario. The visits are part of a regional programme co‑financed at 80 % with a budget of more than €2 million for 17 projects across 11 coastal municipalities, aimed at combating erosion, strengthening resilience to climate change and protecting the coastal heritage. Barontini said the on‑site checks help verify progress and shape future interventions, with the tour to conclude on 4 August in Campo nell’Elba.

In the same area, Scarlino councilor Ilenia Biagiucci of the Scarlino Futuro party criticised the municipal administration for a roughly 5 % increase in the local waste‑tax (TARI), which raises the service cost to over €2.1 million. She argued the hike exceeds the 3.88 % adjustment mandated by ARERA and urged the council to adopt measures to ease the financial burden on households, including possible installment plans.

Both events highlight ongoing local governance challenges in Tuscany, from coastal protection to municipal fiscal policy.
