Tuscany faces rising cost of living and pension poverty

Economic pressures are mounting in Tuscany, as reported by labor and consumer organizations. Fnp-Cisl Toscana has highlighted that over 650,000 pensions in the region fall below 1,000 euros gross per month. The union points to inflation and rising costs as primary drivers of poverty among the elderly, noting that the loss of purchasing power is compounded by increasing healthcare needs and an aging population. To address this, the union has proposed the ‘Agenda of Dignity,’ which calls for stable pension revaluation, tax relief on the thirteenth-month pension, and expanded access to the fourteenth-month pension.

Simultaneously, Federconsumatori Toscana has issued an alarm regarding the rising cost of food. Data shows that fruit and vegetable prices have surged by 12 percent over the last year, with some items like cherry tomatoes increasing by over 50 percent. The organization attributes these spikes to high fuel costs affecting transport and climate-related issues, such as heatwaves and water shortages, which have damaged local crops. Consequently, approximately 16 percent of families have already reduced their consumption of essential goods like meat and fish to manage their budgets.
