Tuscany immigration report shows rising foreign population
The “Rapporto sull’immigrazione in Toscana 2026” reveals that Tuscany has become the third Italian region for foreign resident density, with 433,381 foreign residents accounting for 11.8% of the population. When including individuals with a migratory background, such as second-generation citizens, the figure rises to approximately 15%.
Data indicates that immigration has become a structural phenomenon in the region, helping to offset demographic declines. Since 1991, the growth of the foreign-born population has added over 410,000 residents, compensating for a loss of more than 280,000 Italian residents. A significant trend is the shift toward generations born in Italy; in the 2024/2025 school year, non-Italian citizens made up 17.1% of students, though approximately two out of three were born in Italy.
The report also highlights a geographic shift in population distribution. While concentrations remain high in Prato and central Tuscany, there is notable growth in coastal areas and territories like Val di Cornia, Valdera, Versilia, and Amiata Senese. Experts warn that these expanding areas may face challenges in providing necessary services, such as cultural mediation and Italian language instruction, due to a lack of established support networks.
