Tuscany maintains stable blood supplies despite summer heat
Tuscany has successfully managed blood and plasma supplies despite extreme summer heat and potential shortages reported elsewhere in Italy. Regional President Eugenio Giani credited the stability to the generosity of over 115,000 donors and the coordinated efforts of the healthcare system, volunteer associations, and hospital management.
Data from the first seven months of 2026 shows 98,571 red blood cells collected, representing a 4 percent increase over projections and a 2.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. Notably, the region also saw a 10 percent decrease in red blood cell transfusions due to improved clinical practices and more organized usage, rather than a reduction in hospital activity.
