Tuscany prison system faces crisis amid overcrowding and staff shortages

The prison system in Tuscany is facing a critical crisis characterized by chronic overcrowding, severe shortages of penitentiary police staff, and deteriorating structural conditions. Regional Guarantor for Detainee Rights, Giuseppe Fanfani, reported that the situation in Pisa and Livorno has reached a breaking point following inspections. In Pisa, recent unrest highlighted deep-seated tensions, with reports of poor hygiene and infestations of pests such as bedbugs and rats in cells.

In Prato, political representatives from Azione, including Fabrizio Benzoni and Luca Venturella, have denounced the state of the Dogaia prison as unacceptably precarious. They noted that the facility exceeds its regulatory capacity, contains unusable cells, and suffers from a significant lack of personnel. Benzoni has submitted a parliamentary inquiry to the Minister of Justice, arguing that the current management of the prison system represents a failure of penitentiary policy and requires urgent government intervention rather than emergency-only measures.
