Tuscany unveils 547 million euro plan to combat coastal erosion

The Tuscany Region has unveiled a new 20-year Masterplan to combat coastal erosion and protect infrastructure from the effects of climate change. The long-term strategy carries an estimated total cost of approximately 547.7 million euros, with an initial requirement of 166 million euros projected for the first decade.

Presented by Regional President Eugenio Giani and Environment Councilor David Barontini, the plan outlines specific regional guidelines for monitoring, research, and structural interventions. The northern stretch, spanning from Versilia to the province of Massa-Carrara, has been identified as the area most vulnerable to erosive phenomena.

Key components of the plan include structural works, seasonal beach nourishment, and sediment management. To support beach reconstruction, an estimated 2.8 million cubic meters of material will be required, with an emphasis on utilizing resources through circular economy principles. Specific planned investments include 7 million euros for Marina di Pisa and 44.6 million euros for the stretch between the Magra river mouth and Livorno.
