Tuscany's economy posts modest growth, export surge but faces slow recovery

The IRPET 2026 annual report shows that Tuscany’s economy is holding up despite recent shocks. Gross domestic product is projected to grow by 0.5% in both 2026 and 2027, employment continues to rise (+1.8% in 2025, +1.1% in Q1 2026) and tourism remains positive. Export performance is strong, led by the pharmaceutical sector which grew 21% region‑wide and 35.4% in Siena, while overall manufacturing output slipped slightly by 0.6%.

The report highlights lingering weaknesses: a rise in the share of families feeling relatively poor (10% to 15%), a drop in the household confidence index (113 to 110), and declining activity in transport and traditional textile segments. Regional authorities, including Governor Eugenio Giani, plan to convene tables on labour and productivity, while social partners call for higher wages, greater investment and a focus on research, design and innovation to avoid a functional de‑industrialisation.

Overall, Tuscany has resisted recession but must shift from resilience to stronger, more inclusive growth.
