Tuscia region sites deemed unsuitable for radioactive waste repository

Political representatives and technical experts have raised concerns regarding the selection of sites for a national radioactive waste repository in the Tuscia region of Italy. During a meeting organized by the Province of Viterbo, Forza Italia representatives stated that none of the 21 identified sites in the area are suitable for the facility.

Technical evaluations conducted by an expert team, which were submitted to the government on October 2, analyzed factors including nuclear safety, geology, seismotectonics, landscape, agricultural economy, and infrastructure. The findings suggest that the identified sites face critical issues related to subsoil characteristics, hydrogeological settings, the presence of faults, and hydraulic hazards.

Local associations have called for greater transparency and deeper investigations into health risks, specifically regarding radioactivity and cancer incidence. Proposals include the creation of a centralized information website to make technical documentation more accessible to the public.
