Tushar Gandhi Calls on Kerala Government to Drop Student Protest FIRs

Tushar A. Gandhi, the great‑grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and president of the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation, sent a letter dated July 30 to Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. In the letter he urged the state to withdraw all FIRs, charge‑sheets and criminal cases filed against students who participated in protests supporting a nationwide student movement.

Gandhi said he was “unpleasantly surprised” that the Kerala Police had registered the cases and called the prosecutions “disgraceful”. He cited the support of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the student movement and appealed to the constitutional right to protest, asking the government to act immediately regardless of the students’ political affiliation.
