Tuskegee University Enacts Strict Dress Code, Sparks Debate

Tuskegee University announced a new dress code that bans bonnets, do‑rags, bedroom slippers and revealing clothing in classrooms, dining areas and official events. The policy also tightens cellphone use and attendance monitoring, requiring phones to be off unless a professor permits them and increasing attendance tracking for the upcoming fall term.

President Dr. Mark A. Brown said the rules are intended to prepare students for professional environments and to uphold the university’s long‑standing standards of discipline. The changes come as Tuskegee expects its largest freshman class in more than three decades.

Students, alumni and observers quickly divided over the policy. Supporters argue it reinforces professionalism and the historic emphasis on respectability at HBCUs, while critics contend it police Black hairstyles and reflect outdated notions of dress, sparking a broader cultural debate.
