Viktor Orbán calls for resistance at Tusványos rally in Romania

Former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán appeared at the Tusványos (Tusnad) summer university in Romania, his first public speech as an opposition leader in 16 years. Addressing a crowd of thousands, Orbán urged his Fidesz party to adopt a "resistance" strategy against the new Hungarian government of Peter Magyar, whom he described as establishing a "willful authoritarian regime". He likened Hungary’s current situation to Venezuela, saying, "Hungary is the new Venezuela, only without oil," and characterized Fidesz as now functioning "as a service centre, an incubator, a nursery" for freedom‑loving groups.

The event also featured László Tőkés, president of the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania, who called for territorial autonomy for the Székely (Secuiesc) region and personal autonomy for the Hungarian community in Transylvania. Orbán’s speech highlighted constitutional changes introduced by Magyar’s Tisza Party that limit term limits for ministers and parliamentary seats, which Orbán claims weaken his party’s chances of returning to power. While members of Magyar’s government were not invited, he appealed to supporters to stand against what he called "the tyranny of the new government."
