Tutrakán hosts scientific conference on the Dobrudja Epic
A national scientific conference titled ‘The Dobrudja Epic in Bulgarian Historical Memory’ was held in Tutrakán to mark the 110th anniversary of the military actions of the Bulgarian Army in 1916. The event featured participation from scholars, university professors, and museum specialists from Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia.
One featured presentation by Dr. Kremena Miteva examined the Dobrudja Epic through the perspective of Georgi Pernov, a Bulgarian doctor and poet who studied medicine in Moscow. Another report by Radoslav Simeonov and Petar Boychev focused on forgotten toponyms of Bulgarian military glory in the region.
Historian Professor Petar Stoyanovich noted that the Tutrakán epic represents a chapter in the long-term pursuit of Bulgarian national unification. He observed that while the Dobrudja operation was historically marginalized in Bulgarian memory due to relations with Romania and the socialist era, the battle for Tutrakán remains one of the most significant engagements of the Bulgarian Army during World War I. A major military memorial and cemetery near Tutrakán serves as a site for soldiers from across the country.
