Tuxpan controversy over Tecomar company celebration

A controversy has emerged in Tuxpan regarding a municipal government event that celebrated the history of the company Tecomar. The local administration, led by Daniel Cortina, supported the presentation of a book by former director Carlos Viveros Figueroa, which portrayed the company as a success story.

However, critics point to a tragic event involving the merchant vessel Tuxpan, which disappeared in the Atlantic in February 1987 with its entire crew. While initially attributed to a storm, subsequent investigations and U.S. District Court records suggest the ship suffered mechanical failures, including engine issues and structural cracks, before drifting off course. The court also determined the company's liability for cargo valued at $22 million and compensation for the families of the missing sailors.
