Profepa shuts down unauthorized developments in Hidalgo and Zacatecas

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has carried out several enforcement actions against unauthorized developments in Mexico.

In Hidalgo, Profepa issued a temporary total closure of ‘Wander Cabins,’ a tourist development located within the El Chico National Park. The site, which occupies approximately 1,755.6 square meters of oak forest, included 14 wooden cabins, a parking lot, a cinema, and a jacuzzi. Authorities determined the operation lacked the necessary environmental impact assessments and land-use permits for forest areas.

In Zacatecas, Profepa temporarily closed a rural housing development in Guadalupe La Nigua after detecting the clearing of approximately 1.81 hectares of forest vegetation. The inspection revealed damage to species such as huizache, mesquite, various cacti, and native grasses. The project developers failed to present required authorizations from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for land-use changes.
