Tuxtla Gutiérrez search for missing motorcyclist swept away by floods
A search operation is underway in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, for 20-year-old Bryan Israel Verdy López, who disappeared after being swept away by floodwaters. The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, September 22, when heavy rains caused the Totoposte stream to overflow.
Verdy López, a waiter who had recently received positive medical news regarding his battle with cancer, was riding a motorcycle in the Albania Alta neighborhood when he lost control due to the force of the water. His motorcycle was later recovered, but the driver remains missing. Authorities believe the current may have carried him through a drainage system connected to the stream.
Emergency responders, including Civil Protection and firefighters, have expanded the search from the Totoposte stream to include the Sabinal and Grijalva rivers. The search continues under difficult conditions due to the forecast of further rainfall and the risk of rising water levels caused by tropical wave number 41. Verdy López’s family, who reside in Mexico City, have traveled to the region to assist in the search and have requested that the public avoid spreading unconfirmed rumors regarding his whereabouts.
