Tuxtla Gutiérrez urban growth threatens Zoomat wildlife

Urban expansion in Tuxtla Gutiérrez is creating significant risks for wildlife at the Manuel Álvarez del Toro Zoological Park (Zoomat). The Secretariat of Environment and Natural History (SEMAHN) reported that the lack of a buffer zone and the proximity of urban infrastructure to the zoo's 111-hectare limits have left animals vulnerable.

Recent sightings of spider monkeys outside the enclosure were identified as natural movements within troops rather than escapes. However, these movements expose animals to electrical lines, which have caused serious injuries and amputations. Additionally, the presence of feral cats and dogs poses a disease risk; for example, otters have previously been affected by viruses associated with domestic felines.

SEMAHN is currently working with rescuers and brigadiers to mitigate these risks, noting that animals receive specialized feeding and constant monitoring.
