Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security takes over Tuyên Quang exam cheating case, 27 suspects charged
On 17 July 2026 a teacher and exam secretary at the Tuyên Quang Specialized High School, Nguyễn Thị Diệu Thúy, voluntarily reported to the provincial police. The investigation, initially handled by the Tuyên Quang provincial Public Security Department, identified a series of alleged abuses of official positions during the 2026 high‑school graduation exam, where 147 students reportedly achieved a perfect score of 10 in mathematics.
The Ministry of Public Security decided to transfer the case to its national Crime Investigation Agency, stating that the matter had grown in scale and complexity. The transfer raised the total number of suspects to 27, including the school's principal, additional teachers, and exam officials. Officials noted that the shift in jurisdiction does not reset procedural time limits but may extend them due to the larger evidentiary burden.
The scandal has sparked concerns about university admissions. Around 328 candidates from the exam site have applied for university placements, many with scores that meet or exceed admission thresholds. Authorities and education experts warned that if fraudulent results are later annulled, other applicants could lose admission slots because the current regulations do not allow post‑selection adjustments of cutoff scores.
