Montenegro inspectors close 118 shops, fine €90k for Sunday trading

Montenegro’s Law on Internal Trade designates Sunday as a non‑working day for retail. Since 1 July, the Market Inspection Service, led by chief inspector Marina Radulović, has carried out 123 inspections across the country. Inspectors found widespread violations, sealing 118 retail outlets and issuing 178 infringement notices worth a total of €89,400, bringing fines close to €90,000.

The authorities say the crackdown targets traders who use re‑registration or alternative interpretations of the law to operate on Sundays and public holidays, a practice they claim undermines legal certainty and creates unfair competition. Radulović emphasized that the goal is not punishment but consistent law enforcement, and announced that inspections will continue both during regular hours and evenings to ensure compliance nationwide.
