Tuzla Power Plant emissions failure sparks calls for accountability

The Tuzla Power Plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina has addressed a technical failure in Block 4 that caused significant dust emissions. Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine confirmed that the issue, caused by difficulties in discharging electrofilters, was resolved on Wednesday, returning emissions to projected levels.

Despite the technical fix, the incident has sparked calls for accountability. Federal Energy Minister Vedran Lakić has requested the resignations of the power plant's management and technical heads. Residents of nearby settlements report long-term exposure to hazardous particulate matter, which experts warn poses serious risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health.

Environmental activists and experts highlight that the crisis is exacerbated by aging infrastructure. Block 4, which has been operational since 1971, has exceeded its typical 40-year lifespan. Critics note that the planned Block 7, intended to replace these aging units, has not been built, leaving the region reliant on outdated technology that continues to contribute to a series of environmental challenges in the area.
