Tuzla residents call for ban on electric scooters in city centre

Citizens of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, have intensified complaints about the growing presence of electric scooters in the city centre, arguing that fast, reckless riding endangers pedestrians, children, the elderly and people with disabilities. A recent social‑media post described an incident in which a cyclist nearly struck a child, prompting calls for stricter police patrols and a possible outright ban on scooters in pedestrian zones.

The demand comes amid a backdrop of several serious accidents: a fatal crash involving a scooter rider in Sarajevo and injuries to a teenage girl and a 13‑year‑old boy in Tuzla earlier this year. Authorities note that, since 2020, at least two scooter riders have died and over 110 have been injured nationwide. Because Bosnia and Herzegovina lacks a unified legal framework governing electric scooter use, local officials have proposed amendments to the traffic safety law to set tighter conditions for riders, but the changes have not yet been adopted. Meanwhile, residents are urging immediate measures to improve safety on public streets.
