Tuzla revitalizes 2,000-year-old Antik Mendirek historical site

The 2,000-year-old Antik Mendirek, a historical site containing breakwater and amphora ruins in Tuzla, has been reopened to the public following extensive urban and infrastructural renovations. After remaining largely inactive for approximately 30 years, the area has been transformed into a modern public space while maintaining its protected archaeological and natural status.

Key improvements include the pedestrianization of the area to enhance accessibility for families with strollers and individuals with disabilities. The project involved creating green spaces, installing new lighting, renewing rainwater infrastructure to prevent flooding, and constructing a retaining wall to protect the site from seawater during winter. Additionally, a free parking lot and a boat slipway have been provided to support local boat owners.

Tuzla Mayor Eren Ali Bingöl noted that the site historically served as a stopover for ships traveling to Istanbul, where local residents traded food with sailors. The renovations were carried out following permissions from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.
