TV Asahi apologizes for Toru Tamakawa's remarks on homeless population
TV Asahi held a press conference to apologize for inappropriate comments made by commentator Toru Tamakawa during the broadcast of ‘Hatori Shinichi Morning Show’ on October 22. While discussing hair loss, Tamakawa remarked that if lifestyle habits determined hair density, all homeless people would be bald, adding that some people living “dirty lives” still have full heads of hair.
Tamakawa apologized during the program, but the station's President, Nishi, issued a formal apology on October 27, stating the remarks could promote discrimination and prejudice. The station has issued a strict warning to Tamakawa and the program's management.
Critics and viewers have questioned why the network continues to employ Tamakawa despite a history of controversial statements. Previous incidents include a 10-day suspension in September 2022 regarding comments about former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's state funeral, and remarks in April 2026 concerning Jared Kushner and Iran negotiations. Industry observers suggest Tamakawa is retained because his provocative stance and political critiques drive viewership and fulfill a specific role within the program's format.
