TÜV Association to launch AI certification program

The TÜV Association is developing a framework for voluntary artificial intelligence certifications to enhance market reliability and user trust. The program, which is currently in a pilot phase, is scheduled to roll out incrementally starting in late 2026.

The initiative aims to complement the requirements of the European AI Act by providing independent technical assessments. The program consists of three distinct certification levels that vary in depth and methodology:

First, a level for AI systems that do not fall under the high-risk category according to EU regulations, focusing on basic quality and safety requirements.

Second, a level open to all AI systems, involving structured risk assessments, documentation reviews, and on-site inspections by auditors.

Third, a comprehensive level that includes additional independent technical testing to evaluate the specific performance and reliability of the system in detail.

These certifications are voluntary and are intended to serve as a quality seal rather than a replacement for mandatory legal audits, such as those required for high-risk AI applications under upcoming regulations in 2027.
