Roque Santeiro returns to TV Globo in special rerun

TV Globo is re-airing the classic Brazilian telenovela ‘Roque Santeiro’ in its ‘Edição Especial’ afternoon slot. Originally broadcast between 1985 and 1986, the production was created by Dias Gomes and co-authored by Aguinaldo Silva and Marcílio Moares.

The story is a political, religious, and social satire set in the fictional town of Asa Branca. It follows the legend of Roque Santeiro (played by José Wilker), a man believed to have been killed by a bandit but who is actually alive. His return threatens the local power structures maintained by the wealthy farmer Sinhozinho Malta (Lima Duarte) and the widow Porcina (Regina Duarte).

The production is noted for launching the careers of several prominent actors, including Claudia Raia, Patrícia Pillar, and Maurício Mattar. It also featured iconic elements such as a massive set in Guaratiba and a celebrated opening sequence by Hans Donner.
