TV Globo to re-air classic telenovela Roque Santeiro

TV Globo will re-air the classic Brazilian telenovela ‘Roque Santeiro’ starting in October as part of its ‘Edição Especial’ afternoon programming. The series, originally broadcast in 1985, is scheduled to premiere on October 5.

Written by Dias Gomes and Aguinaldo Silva, the story is set in the fictional town of Asa Branca. It follows the myth of Roque Santeiro, a man believed to have died a hero defending the town, which allowed local leaders to build power and wealth based on his perceived sainthood. The plot is disrupted when Roque unexpectedly returns to the town alive, threatening the social and political status quo.

The production is noted for its social, political, and religious satire, featuring iconic characters such as Sinhozinho Malta and Viúva Porcina. The original 1985 run was a massive success, achieving high audience ratings.
