TV Globo to rerun classic telenovela Roque Santeiro in October

TV Globo has announced that the classic telenovela ‘Roque Santeiro’ will return to its programming on October 5 as part of the ‘Edição Especial’ afternoon slot, replacing ‘Além do Tempo’. The announcement marks the 40th anniversary of the original 1985 production, which was written by Dias Gomes and Aguinaldo Silva.

Set in the fictional town of Asa Branca, the plot follows the legend of Roque Santeiro (originally played by José Wilker), a man believed to have died defending the town. His supposed martyrdom created a massive economic and political structure in the town, which is threatened when he unexpectedly reappears alive 17 years later. The story features iconic characters such as Sinhozinho Malta (Lima Duarte) and Viúva Porcina (Regina Duarte).

The production has a notable history, including a 1975 version that was blocked by military censorship. The 1985 version became a massive cultural phenomenon with high viewership ratings. This upcoming rerun will be the first time the novela has aired on free-to-air television in 25 years.
