TÜV introduces mandatory gas inspections for 1.8 million leisure vehicles, while reporting 21% car failure rate inGerman

From July 2025 the TÜV Association will require a separate gas‑system inspection (DVGW G607) for up to 1.8 million leisure vehicles – motorhomes, caravans and other RVs equipped with a fixed liquefied‑gas tank. The test, performed by recognised experts such as certified workshops or mobile services, must be renewed every 24 months and checks the entire gas installation for leaks and proper function. The rule aims to lower the “high safety risk” posed by ageing or poorly maintained gas systems, according to TÜV expert Frank Schneider, and to give clear standards for manufacturers and installers, as highlighted by DVGW specialist Markus Lau.

A TÜV report covering 9.5 million main‑inspection (HU) checks between July 2024 and June 2025 shows that 21.5 % of passenger cars fail the test. The most frequent defects are faulty low‑beam headlights, followed by problems with brake discs, brake pads, brake lines, suspension springs and tyres. Vehicles classified with significant or unsafe defects must be repaired and re‑inspected within a set deadline.
