German dermatology experts warn against dangerous ‘Tanmaxxing’ sun‑burn trend

A social‑media trend called “Tanmaxxing” encourages teenagers and young adults to expose themselves to intense midday sun without sunscreen, seeking a deep tan or even a sunburn.  Christian Sander, chief physician of the dermatology clinic at Asklepios Klinik Hamburg St. Georg, says the practice is hazardous: “Ein Sonnenbrand ist kein ästhetisches Statement, kein ‘Look’, sondern ein Hilferuf der Haut.”  He stresses that a sunburn is a cellular injury that raises the risk of skin cancer and that there is no “safe” or “healthy” tan.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) reports a steady rise in UV radiation levels – over 10 % increase in Dortmund and nearly 20 % in the Brussels area since 1997 – amplifying the danger.  Experts advise using sunscreen with SPF 50, avoiding the peak‑sun hours, and informing parents and educators so they can discourage the trend.  The warning is echoed in French media, where dermatologists also highlight the same health risks.
