Germany mobility trends: Rising EV interest and shifting market leaders

The 2026 TÜV Mobility Study indicates a significant shift in German transportation preferences. While the car remains the primary mode of transport for over 80 percent of respondents, interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is rising. Approximately 25 percent of Germans would prefer a pure EV for their next purchase, and half would opt for an alternative drive if hybrids are included. Despite this, concerns regarding high acquisition costs, limited range, and insufficient charging infrastructure persist.

In the broader European market, July 2026 data shows the Dacia Sandero became the best-selling model, overtaking the Tesla Model Y. While EV registrations in Europe grew by 51 percent compared to the previous year, Tesla experienced a decline in monthly sales. Additionally, Chinese automotive brands reached a record 11.2 percent market share in Europe, driven by a strategic shift toward plug-in hybrids to navigate EU tariffs.

Public sentiment regarding urban mobility remains divided; a majority of respondents oppose restrictive measures for car traffic in city centers. Meanwhile, there is strong public demand for increased investment in public transit and regional rail networks.
