TÜV-Verband warns of high accident risks from ladder use

The TÜV-Verband is highlighting the significant risks associated with the use of ladders and steps in both domestic and professional settings. While these tools are essential for household tasks like changing light bulbs or cleaning gutters, the danger of falls is frequently underestimated.

In the commercial sector, the statistics are stark. According to 2024 data from the Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV), there were 19,636 reportable work accidents involving ladders. These incidents resulted in twelve fatalities and 961 cases where injuries were severe enough to require accident pensions.

André Siegl, a specialist for occupational health and safety at the TÜV-Verband, notes that factors such as unstable footing, loose cables, or defective spread locks on stepladders can easily lead to accidents. To mitigate these risks, the organization emphasizes selecting the correct equipment for the specific task, such as using small steps or three-to-five-step stepladders for indoor household chores, and rung ladders for garden and house maintenance.
